Instructor: Kristy Gordon

This figure painting workshop is designed for artists who want to learn the alla prima painting technique through observation of the live model. Alla prima means “at once” in Italian and is an approach to painting that is done in a quickly executed wet-into-wet fashion, producing a fresh, painterly approach. Artists of all skill levels will have an opportunity to develop a painting, utilizing a full palette. We will begin by discussing comparative measuring, to get accurate proportions. Then we will move to color and concentrate on big form modeling. Next we will define the planes of the face and features, and finish by adding the highlight and fine-tuning the edges. Students will learn how to achieve accurate proportions as well as how to paint convincing flesh tones and render textures like hair. The class will include a painting demonstration, discussion and individual instruction at the easel. Discussions will include comparative measuring, proportions of the figure, stages to developing a painting, as well as form, value, edges, unity and modeling with color temperature.
